Metal Roofing For Your Home

We are all looking for ways to contribute to the longevity of the earth by recycling and conserving energy whenever possible.  But did you know that metal roofing can help your home to leave a smaller environmental footprint?  It’s true.  Here are some ways in which metal roofing helps you to contribute to the cleanliness of our environment and the conservation of our natural resources.

First, metal roofing generally contains a minimum of 25% post consumer recycled material.  Using post-consumer recycled material means that you are using is material that has been saved from going to a landfill directly by consumer recycling after the product has finished its original intent.  This is a great way to directly impact the environment – choosing to use post-consumer recycled materials helps lessen the amount of materials in landfills and keep our air and groundwater cleaner.

Secondly, the materials used in the metal roofing will reflect about 90% of the sun’s rays.  What does this mean to you?  Lower energy bills!  Energy Star compliant, the metal roofing products not only look great, but help you to keep more of your hard earned money in your pocket.

You will never have to replace your metal roof either.  This means, again, no waste – but if you were to remove it, it is fully recyclable, and therefore, much better for the environment again.   Keep in mind that some metal roofing companies may want to put your new metal roof directly over top of your old asphalt shingles, citing the cost savings and ‘green” aspect of not having to dispose of your old asphalt roof.  However, if left under the new metal roofing the asphalt can get so hot that it will melt, which can cause damage to your home and roof structure.

For most homeowners, energy efficiency in their home is of paramount importance.  In Ohio, naturally, we get the extremes in temperatures, from summers in the 90s to below zero temperatures in the winter.  We get snow, ice, hail, rain and lately, even tornadoes!  So it is becoming more and more important to make your home as weatherproof as possible, and in doing so, as energy efficient as possible.  Creating a more energy efficient home with new replacement windows, insulation and metal roofing will go a long way toward reducing your home energy costs and helping to make your home’s environmental footprint smaller.
